Sevalaya focusing on Women Empowerment and opened our Women Empowerment Through Education (WETE) Project in Ayalur Village, Thiruvallur District, with a view to eradicate Women-illiteracy in the village. This centre will function exclusively to educate women. The uniqueness of this initiative is that Sevalaya’s alumni group and children of Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharatiyar Higher Secondary School, will take classes for the village women. With this unique idea the centre has been inaugurated by Ms. Anu Oza, a noted Social activist (Daughter of Mr. Oza, I.A.S. Retd.) has taken keen interest to evolve working and planning to pursue this project effectively.
Over 200 persons from the nearby villages participated in the function. Besides, foreign volunteers , who take keen interest in Sevalaya’s activities also attended. The Women participated were taught alphabets on the first day. It is gratifying to note that all the participants showed good interest.
Ms. Pavithra, an alumnus of Sevalaya, a B.Sc., graduate, has been appointed as the Co-ordinator of the centre, in taking classes and running effectively. Participants hailed this initiative as a fitting and purposeful one on the International Women’s Day.
