The first batch of students – 24 women and 6 men were distributed certificates on completion of the garment stitching and PC skill training course, respectively on 13th April 2017, at the Mambakkam centre.
Mambakkam community college is fully sponsored by PPG Asian Paints. Garment stitching and PC skills are taught to the local unemployed youth, with a view to enhance their skills and employment opportunities. Besides these two trades, an evening tuition centre for school going children reinforces their English, Math, Science and Social Studies curriculum. Nine of the seventeen students have shown improvement in the grades in the past 5 months.
Speaking at the function, C Samuel Raj, Head of Technology, PPG Asian paints exhorted the women to take independent decisions. He also said that all change happens incrementally. He was confident that the impact of these community colleges will be measurable in a few years.
