Mahakavi Bharathiyar is one of the inspirers of Sevalaya. Statues for this national poet has been installed in all places associated with his life like Ettayapuram, Chennai, Puducherry. Even Varanasi where he spent a few years studying has a statue of Bharathiyar.
It is unfortunate that there are no traces of Bharathiyar in Kadayam village in Tenkasi, the birthplace of his wife Chellammal, where he spent a few years. It was in Kadayam that Bharathi – Chellammal’s marriage took place and it was here that he penned many immortal poems.
Sevalaya has undertaken to create a Chellammal Bharathi centre in the village. The government library in Kadayam, which is in a dilapidated condition will be demolished and a new library with modern amenities will be constructed. A life-size statue of Bharathi Chellammal will be installed and a museum on the theme “Bharathi in Kadayam” will also be constructed.
The groundbreaking ceremony for this historic initiative is to be held on 19th January 2022 at Kadayam.
