Chennai Tamil New Year was celebrated on 16 Apr 2025 at Sevalaya’s Kasuva Centre,
near Thiruninravur. G Bhavani, Scientist F, Senior Director and Head, Bureau of
Indian Standards, Chennai Branch graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Harish Sampath,
Section Officer, BIS also participated. Sevalaya’s Standards Club was inaugurated on
the occasion by N Annapurna, Trustee, Sevalaya in the presence of the Chief Guest.
Open to students from Std IX to XII, the aim of the club is to provide learning
opportunities and involve students in activities related to quality and standards.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Guest said, “Quality is not something to be
learnt as a standalone topic. It is part of our day to day lives. If our thoughts
and upbringing are good, everything around us will be of good quality too. Our
ancestors were focused on doing good everyday and so started the day with a kolam
in front of the house- that kolam has standards too. Even in a small biscuit that
we eat, its shape, packaging, taste and longevity are documented as standards.
Items like pencils, blackboards and bindis that we use daily, all have Indian standards”.
Addressing the students she added, “Keep progressing in your life and take care of
your parents and those around you. Being a part of the Standards Club will help
you build confidence and succeed in life”. She also elaborated on the various
competitions that would be conducted as part of the club. “You will also be taken
on industrial visits to understand how products are manufactured in factories and
explained the science behind it”, she concluded. Harish Sampath in a short session
explained about the BIS Care app, an app aimed at increasing awareness regarding
standards among the public. The Chief Guest distributed Standards Badges to the
students. Manak Geet, the inaugural song of the club was played. Prizes were
distributed to 24 students who won in the speech, drawing, essay writing and quiz
competitions. The monthly manuscript magazine ‘Vidiyal’ prepared by students with
the guidance of teachers was released on the occasion. The Chief Guest also sponsored
and distributed snacks for 250 students. Students presented engaging cultural
performances. Earlier, N Annapurna, Trustee, Sevalaya welcomed the gathering and
outlined Sevalaya’s activities. “Every new year we take up a resolution. Today I
am happy that we learnt about standards and their importance. We usually buy items
that attract our attention without caring about their quality. I thank the Chief
Guest for educating us on the importance of checking quality and standards during
our daily shopping”, she said. Navin Kumar N, AVP, Donor Relations, Sevalaya
delivered the Vote of Thanks. A memento was presented to the Chief Guest.
