Sevalaya organises Smokeless Bhogi Rally in Ambattur; Students Raise Awareness
Against Pollution Sevalaya NGO which runs Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharathiyar Community
College in Ambattur for underprivileged youth and women, organised a Smokeless
Bhogi Rally in Ambattur on 10th January 2025. 35 students of the Community College,
staff and members of the public participated in the rally, raising slogans against
smoke pollution and burning of plastic waste materials.
J Dhasarathan, Sub-Inspector of Police (T1-Ambattur) and G Karunakaran, Real Estate
Business Owner and Temple Administrator, Shri Mangala Siddhi Vinayagar Aalayam,
Ambattur were the Chief Guests.Inaugurating the rally and speaking on the occasion,
the Chief Guest J Dhasarathan spoke about how members of the police and traffic police
department face issues due to outdoor pollution on a day-to-day basis. The Chief Guests
underlined the importance of balancing the tradition of celebrating Bhogi with reducing
pollution for the health of the environment.The participants carried banners showcasing
the damage caused to the environment and our health due to smoke and plastic pollution.
The rally was taken out from Thiruvengada Nagar Park to Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharathiyar
Community College in Vivek Nagar, Ambattur for a distance of 1.5 kms.
Refreshments sponsored by the Chief Guest G Karunakaran, were distributed to the
participants after the rally.Earlier Johney S, Head- Skill Development, Sevalaya welcomed
the gathering. V Deepashri, Centre Head, Sevalaya’s Mahakavi Bharathiyar Community College,
Ambattur delivered the Vote of Thanks. They shared that Sevalaya has been organising Smokeless
Bhogi rallies for the past many years. A memento was presented to the Chief Guest.
Sevalaya is a registered charitable trust headquartered in Chennai, operating since 1988.
More than 2,200 underprivileged children are provided free education at their campus located
near Thiruninravur. Spread across 40+ centres in South India, Sevalaya also provides skill
development courses for youth, runs After-School Study Centres, Children and Old Age Homes,
Hospitals, healthcare and rural development projects, gaushalas and organic farms, with all
its services provided free of cost, reaching nearly 10,00,000 beneficiaries in 37 years.
