Sevalaya Enters Bengaluru – Inaugurate After-School Study Centres
Sevalaya, a registered Charitable Trust headquartered in Chennai, inaugurated
4 After-School Study Centres in Bengaluru at an event in Srirampuram on
1 Feb 2025. Designed in collaboration with IIT- Madras’ Vidya Shakti initiative,
these free centres for school-going underprivileged students are equipped with
smart-boards, audio-visual equipment and books. They offer support in daily
lessons, with a strong focus on science, maths and other subjects, along with
mentoring and a conducive learning environment. Naveen Sathyanarayana, Director,
Kidken Edu Solutions, Bengaluru, Dr A Madhusudhan Babu, Principal and Secretary,
Perumal Vidhya Nikethan, Little Flower High School, Bengaluru and S Bhama,
Educationist graced the occasion as the Chief Guests.Sevalaya’s well-wishers
Muthulakshmi, Lakshmanan and other learning centre teachers of Sevalaya in
Bengaluru were also present. The special guests were given a grand welcome
with a spectacular procession of students.

Unveiling the name board, the Chief Guests paid floral tributes to Sevalaya’s
inspirational icons- Mahakavi Bharathiyar, Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda
and Karnataka’s literary legend Rashtrakavi Kuvempu.Speaking on the occasion,
Naveen Sathyanarayana shared, “I wasn’t interested in studies and couldn’t
afford evening classes due to financial constraints. But then, I was fortunate
enough to attend free evening classes, which helped me secure the top position
in my class. This opportunity allowed me to achieve a better place in life.
Similarly, you should make the most of this opportunity to advance in life.”
He also commended the fact that Sevalaya follows the Montessori teaching method
in Tamil and implements TQM practices, which have been typically used in large
companies. Madhusudhan Babu said, “It is a great pleasure to work with Sevalaya.
I am witnessing the ideas I’ve read about in books being put into action here at
Sevalaya.” He also presented a 21-volume, chronologically arranged collection of
Bharathiyar’s works to the Sevalaya library.
During the event, the essential educational equipment, including smart TVs, desks,
and chairs which will be useful for the students was provided. These after-school
study centres, initially supported financially by leading corporates, are located
in Ejipura, Juganahalli, Lingarajapuram, and Srirampuram, as well as 5 other
locations in Chennai. It is noteworthy that Sevalaya’s free evening learning centres
are now operating across 21 additional locations in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
Earlier, V Muralidharan, Founder and Managing Trustee of Sevalaya, delivered the welcome
address, greeted the Chief Guests, and spoke about Sevalaya’s initiatives. He recalled
the time when he studied at the Indian Institute of Science, near Srirampuram, and rescued
hundreds of child labourers working in the agarbathi industry. These children were then
enrolled in schools. He expressed that, after 43 years, history has repeated itself, and
it is a matter of great satisfaction and privilege to establish learning centres for
underprivileged children in the same area.Revathi K, Head Mistress of Sevalaya, delivered
the vote of thanks, and a memento was presented to the Chief Guest. The event concluded
with the singing of the National Anthem.
Sevalaya is a registered charitable trust headquartered in Chennai, operating since 1988.
More than 2,200 underprivileged children are provided free education at their campus located
near Thiruninravur. Spread across 40+ centres in South India, Sevalaya also provides skill
development courses for youth, runs After-School Study Centres, Children and Old Age Homes,
Hospitals, healthcare and rural development projects, gaushalas and organic farms, with all
its services provided free of cost, reaching nearly 8,00,000 beneficiaries in 36 years.
