32 Underprivileged Youth Complete Free 6 Month Computers and Tailoring Course through Sevalaya, Secure Job Offers
Sevalaya’s Gayathri Memorial Vocational Training Centre, Pattinapakkam marked the graduation of 32 underprivileged youth including 26 women at an event on 6th January 2025. They had successfully completed free 6 months courses in Computers and Tailoring.
K Balasubramanian, M N Gayathri Charities, Chennai who donated the premises to Sevalaya a few years ago graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The skill development courses were sponsored by Wood India Private Limited.
Speaking on the occasion, Balasubramanian urged the students to derive the maximum benefit from the education that they have received and build their careers successfully. The Chief Guest then awarded certificates to the students. A few students had also received job offers in Sevalaya’s Pattinapakkam centre and in various other organisations in the city.
B Subashini, a Tailoring student hailing from Pattinapakkam shared her experience about how though she knew about the centre, she finally took the initiative to join the course 6 months ago. Today she earns a steady income through stitching orders that the centre receives from various institutions.
Earlier V Muralidharan, Founder and Managing Trustee, Sevalaya welcomed the gathering and spoke about how the centre was started to uplift the underprivileged fishing community. He also encouraged the students to focus on building their skills first and that monetary benefits would eventually follow. He also recalled how Karthik, a alumnus of Sevalaya’s Community College has built a successful career and was regularly recruiting students from Sevalaya for his organisation.
P Prasanna, Vice President- Donor Relations, Sevalaya delivered the Vote of Thanks. A memento was presented to the Chief Guest.
Sevalaya is a registered charitable trust headquartered in Chennai, operating since 1988. More than 2,200 underprivileged children are provided free education at their campus located near Thiruninravur. Spread across 40+ centres in South India, Sevalaya also provides skill development courses for youth, runs After-School Study Centres, Children and Old Age Homes, Hospitals, healthcare and rural development projects, gaushalas and organic farms, with all its services provided free of cost, reaching nearly 10,00,000 beneficiaries in 37 years.
