R Ravikumar (Deputy Manager, The Oriental Insurance Co Ltd, Regional Office, Chennai) hoisted the National Flag at the 69th Independence Day celebrations at Sevalaya service centre at Kasuva Village (42 Kms west of Chennai).

In his address the Chief Guest spoke to the children about how our Independence was earned after struggles and sacrifices by our leaders and many unsung heroes of yesteryears. He urged the children to make use of the best opportunities provided by Sevalaya and blossom into good citizens building a better India.

A longtime donor and well-wisher of Sevalaya, R. Rangaramanujam participated in the celebrations with his family. Gokul, his grandson from USA conducted Robotics classes for the students from 5th to 12th August 2015, with VEX IQ Super Kits, which his younger sister Harini Kanna had won as a part of the finalist team Chandrabots of 2015 MOONBOTS, a Google Lunar X-Prize Challenge. The finalists of the challenge are required to do public outreach – pass on the VEX IQ Super Kits which they have received, to a deserving institution or organization of their choice, and the family has chosen Sevalaya.

Demonstration of a robot built by the students was the highlight of the day’s celebrations.
